Throughout The Holy Quran, prayer and zakat are closely associated. Whenever Allah commands ‘Perform prayers’, the other command follows : ‘ And pay zakat.’ This is very significant. Prayer is a link between a slave and his Lord. Likewise zakat is a link between a slave and their fellow slave. This means that to be a true Muslim, one should have a good relation with one’s Lord. On the same ground and in the same sense, also at the same time, a Muslim should have a no less good relation with their fellow brother and sister Muslims, and even their fellow brother and sister humans. This is because zakat is sometimes paid to Muslims and non Muslims. If prayer addresses the individual Muslims, zakat addresses the Muslim community as a whole and in a general sense. If prayer is a passive way of worship, in the sense that a Muslim performs it without any seemingly obvious effect on the fellow Muslims, zakat is a positive way of worship in the sense that a Muslim gives a way a specific sum of theirmoney to help the fellow Muslims. This way, Islam achieces the balance between the individual interest and thecomprehensive welfare of the society as a big one body which enjoys the greatest degrees of happiness and success in the fold of Islam.
