POST     COMMENTARY

Fasting and Zakat are strongly related. The wisdom behind fasting is that a ‘ rich’ Muslim senses and feels the way a ‘poor’ Muslim feels. Fasting is a practical lesson and exercise on how Muslims should have solidarity towards each other. The rich should help the poor. Zakat practically solves the crisis of poverty in the Muslim societ. Poor Muslims have an acknowledged right in the wealth of the rich Muslims. It is not a favour that the rich Muslims pay zakat. On the contrary, Zakat a pillar of Islam, without which, a Muslim’s faith is not complete. So rich Muslims must willingly and happily pay their zakat. Also zakat is an organised process and a well regulated way of worship. Zakat is paid at certain times. Zakat is paid at certain rates. Zakat is paid to certain categories and groups of Muslims, and sometimes to non Muslims. Zakat helps fight poverty in society. Also it helps  fight crimes in society. Some people are forced and obliged to resort to crime because of their urgant and dear need for money, and the fact that the society where they live doesn’t give them the most needed help they badly deserve. Islam has skillfully tackled this sensetive issue by imposing zakat on the rich to help the poor. Ultimately, the rich benefit from zakat in the sense that their money is immune, their society is  crime-free. Thus they are safe.
