There is no pleasure for the slaves and no salvation in the hereafter except with obeying Muhammad ﷺ

The First Principle of Uluhiyah:

“There is no pleasure for the slaves and no salvation in the hereafter except with obeying Muhammad ﷺ”

Notes taken by Shamsul Islam from the lectures of Shaykh Dr. Khalid Khan

The worship of Allah The Exalted cannot be complete without to obey Muhammad ﷺ. Indeed Allah عز و جل‎ created all of His creation for His (Allah) worship, for Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (alone).” [adh-Dhariyat (51) : 56]

There is no worship except by obeying Allah and His Prophet ﷺ, as whatever we know from the Sunnah, whether it is the waajibat (obligatory) or Mustahhab (recommended) is the Deen, and anything out of that is not the Deen and misguidance. This is why Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“Those are the limits set by Allah: those who obey Allah and His Messenger will be admitted to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, to abide therein (forever) and that will be the supreme achievement.” [an-Nisa (4) : 13]

Allah enjoined us to obey Muhammad ﷺ in forty places in the Qur’an, thus obliging the believers to obey him

Allah عز و جل‎ didn’t say to obey all the Messengers, rather He عز و جل‎ said, ‘Rasuluhu’, which means to obey him ﷺ specifically (takhsees).

This is why the Prophet ﷺ said,

“He who innovates something in this matter of ours that is not of it will have it rejected.” Bukhari

Meaning, if our action is not from the Sunnah of Muhammad ﷺ and of what he brought and explained will be rejected by Allah عز و جل‎

Jabir bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه narrated that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said,

“The best speech is that embodied in the book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad ﷺ. The most evil affairs are their innovations; and every innovation is an error.”Reported in Muslim

There is no obedience and Uluhiyah (worship) without to follow him ﷺ.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“Verily, he among you who lives [long] will see great controversy, so you must keep to the Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the rightly guided Rashdite Caliphs – cling to them stubbornly.” Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi

Allah enjoined us to obey Muhammad ﷺ in forty places in the Qur’an, thus obliging the believers to obey him  , so if someone says, “Is the Sunnah obligatory or recommended?”, then we give them this and say that every Sunnah of Muhammad  is obligatory, even though there maybe some differences in grades.

Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“Obey Allah and the Messenger; that you may obtain mercy.” [al-Imran (3) : 132]

“Say [O Muhammad to mankind]: If you [really] love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you and your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [al-Imran (3) : 31]

“Say: ‘Obey Allah and His Messenger”: But if they turn back, Allah loves not those who reject faith.” [al-Imran (3) : 32]

This ayah is very important because Allah عز و جل‎ is saying that the one who turns away from Muhammad ﷺ is a Kaafir (disbeliever), and to turn away means to refuse to accept, obey and follow him .

Allah’s Messenger  said,

“All my followers will enter paradise except those who refuse” They said, “O Allah’s Messenger! ﷺ Who will refuse?” He ﷺ said, “Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it).” Bukhari

Allah عز و جل‎ says regarding the one who turns away from Muhammad  as having no Emaan (faith), and this is further explained in surah an-Nisa:

“But no, by the Lord, they have no (real) faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction.” [an-Nisa (4) : 65]

The circumstance of this ayah came when Zubayr رضي الله عنه had a dispute with his neighbour about water. The water used to come to Zubayr’s land first and then his neighbour, so they came to Muhammad  to solve the dispute. He ﷺ said to Zubayr that he should irrigate his land first, but his neighbour rejected and turned away from the judgment of Muhammad .

So this is how Allah sent the revelation and made obedience to him  obligatory because he ﷺ is the only outlet for the light (the Qur’an) that was sent down, and a channel to guide people. So obeying Allah and His Messenger is the foundation of our ibadaat (worship) and whoever does not obey him  will enter the hell-fire. Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“And thus we sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruh (a revelation and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book (Qur’an), nor what is Faith (Emaan)? But We have made it a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the straight Path (i.e. Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism).” [ash-Shura (42) : 52]

The Qur’an and Sunnah came through the Prophet  and this is explained in the following verse. Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“As we have sent among you a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) from yourselves, to recite to you Our verses and to purify you, who will teach you the Kitab and Hikmah (Sunnah), and teach you that of which you have no knowledge.” [al-Baqarah (2) : 151] and Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“Allah has surely been gracious to the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves to recite to them His verses, to purify them the Kitab and Hikmah, though before that they were in clear error.” [al-Baqarah (2) : 151]

Allah (swt) mentions time and time again of His favour of sending Muhammad  to recite the wahy (revelation), as he is the only way of receiving the message of Islam. Thus Allah has made it obligatory upon the believers to obey him . Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“O you who believe! obey Allah and his Messenger and those people of authority among you. If you differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you do believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is best and most suitable for final determination.” [an-Nisa (4) : 59]

The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Convey on behalf of me even one verse.”

This is the knowledge that has reached us through the Prophet Muhammad , and to preach of the Deen is the greatest of obligation. He  said,

“Whoever lies about me deliberately will find his seat in the hell-fire.” Bukhari

Allah did not allow any Tahreet (distorting the proof) and Tamtheel and Allah blessed this Ummah of Muhammad  that we have riwayah (narrations) and isnad (chains of narrations).

Tahreet is a way of changing and distorting the word and meaning like what happened to the people of Injeel and Torah, not that the Torah and Injeel can be changed and distorted because it is the word of Allah, but the people pushed their tongue to change the word and meaning of the Torah and Injeel. Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“There is among them a section who distort the book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the book, but it is no part of the book; and they say, ‘That is from Allah.’ But it is not from Allah: It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it!” [al-Imran (3) : 78]

However, Allah عز و جل‎ blessed the Ummah of Muhammad  with riwayah (narration) and isnad (chain of narration) which never occurred in nations before Muhammad . There was no way of recording narrations and nothing documented with the chains of narrations, whereas the Qur’an has riwayah (narrations) and isnad (chain of narration) even to how it is recited.

Allah عز و جل‎ preserved the Qur’an through the Prophet Muhammad  and his companions with riwayah and isnad. Therefore, Uluhiyah (worship) of Allah cannot be complete without the obedience to Muhammad , and whoever says he can worship Allah عز و جل‎ without to obey him  is a Kaafir (disbeliever) and misguided. Allah عز و جل‎ says,

“Say: ‘Obey Allah and His Messenger”: But if they turn back, Allah loves not those who reject faith.” [al-Imran (3) : 32]

If Allah makes you stand up you will never fall, and if he lets you fall and leaves you to yourself, you will always fall.
