بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Abu Bakr Ibn ‘Ayyaash said in praise of Imam Sufyan Ath-Thawri:
إني لأرى الرجل يصحب سفيان فيعظم
“I see a person who accompanies Sufyan immediately becoming great!”
Not only are sins and bad habits contagious, but greatness is as well.
Have you heard of the term ‘foot-binding’? It’s in reference to an old Chinese practice of applying painfully tight binding to the feet of young girls to prevent them from further growth.
Many times, our potential to grow and earn the highest grades in Paradise is restricted due to the low-ambitions of the people whom we’ve chosen to surround ourselves with. In such cases however, it’s not our feet that have been restricted from growth, but something *far* more critical;
Our relationship with Allah and our rank in the Hereafter.
This is ‘iman-binding! For as long as you continue to walk with them, your potential in the Hereafter may remain capped.
If you want an accurate indication of the type of person whom you will be 10 years down the line, all you need to do is take a quick glance at the people whom you’ve chosen as friends.
Let us draw close to the likes of Sufyan. You know who they are. Perhaps we too will become great.
