Bringing Up Our Children with Deen and Dunya

Part 1 | Part 2

I am sure many of you would agree that raising our children as model Muslims is not an easy task in today’s world. No matter how much we would like to shield and protect our children from the bad influence of the world outside the sanctity of our homes, it somehow creeps in through cracks and little openings. Whether you live in a Muslim country or abroad, unfortunately there is little difference today. True, it is not possible to keep your children completely safe from all the negative forces and influences, yet there are damage control methods to minimize the evil influence. We will try to discuss some ways to help you in raising your children with the right balance of Deen and dunya in their lives. After all, as we all know our efforts and NIYYAH will be rewarded, not just the results.

Narrated by ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab

I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for.” [1]

Television plays an important role in making or breaking the concepts you are building for your children. True, all of us exert extreme caution in screening what the kids are watching on television. But the pitfall is the seemingly innocent “Cartoons”. Parents switch on the cartoon channel and leave their kids unattended for hours on stretch. If you take a closer look at what cartoons are being aired these days, you would be horrified to see the cartoons are full of violence and use slangs/ dirty language. Another point of concern is the stress that is laid to promote sexuality amongst the heroes and heroines of the cartoons. Most of the cartoons now have a PG Rating. So, if you wish your kids not to pick up these influences, kindly start screening the cartoons, too. Watch cartoons with them. It can be a perfect family time activity in the evening or over the weekends. You would spend some capital time together. There are a number of Islamic cartoons available on the net and on DVDs that tell Islamic and Quranic stories.

Reading is a habit that cannot be praised enough. The love of reading should be instilled in the kids from an early stage, but please be sure of what your kids are reading and whether it is appropriate for their age. You don’t have to go through the entire book, just skim through a few pages, see a couple of reviews and if you don’t find anything wrong with it, give a green signal to your kid to read it. Introduce him to Islamic Literature. There are some exceptional books out there for kids including biographies of Prophets of Allah, the Sahabah and Sahabiat etc. Many of the Quranic stories have been written in language suitable for kids to read and enjoy. Try to turn the natural curiosity towards our Deen. Introduce them to Arabic language as it would help them in understanding Quran and hadith. It would also help them in understanding the meanings of prayers (salat), which would lead to increase in khushoo in salat and help them in perfecting their salat. Instill in them the love and fear of Allah through reading. Sometimes you would feel reluctance on your kids’ part to share what they are reading; they might feel you are invading their privacy. Please don’t give up on this point. When older, your kids are bound to remember and appreciate the time and effort you invested in them. You would be surprised to know that when you read a book together, kids really love discussing the book with you. You can create a competition to see who completes reading the books first, but be sure not to spoil the climax!
