Allah سبحانه و تعالى Said:
إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ
“The believers are but brothers (in Deen)…” [Al-Hujuraat, 10]
The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم Said:
لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحبه لنفسه
“None of you will truly believe until he loves for your brother what he loves for yourself…” [Agreed upon]
From the characteristics of our Salaf was their concern and anguish for their fellow Muslims. Realising the acute implication of such Ayaat and ahadeeth, they could not overstate its importance in their lives and how they reacted to their own shortfall in this regard.
One may say there are such examples on the tongues of people today, where we seek fortune and goodness for others as much as ourselves, but how many actually try putting these words in any meaningful action?
Al-Sarri al-Saqati (d. 253 AH) said:
منذ ثلاثين سنة أنا في الاستغفار من قولي: الحمد لله مرة قيل: وكيف ذلك؟ فقال: وقع ببغداد حريق، فاستقبلني رجل، فقال لي: نجا حانوتك فقلت: الحمد لله. فمنذ ثلاثين سنة أنا نادم على ما قلت، حيث أردت لنفسي خيرًا مما حصل للمسلمين
“For thirty years I have been making istighfar for saying (the word): ‘Al Hamdulillah’.
It was said:‘And how is that?’
He replied: ‘A fire occurred in Baghdad, and a man (came and) told me that my shop was saved (from the fire). So I said: ‘Al Hamdulillah’. I regret what I said for thirty because I sought goodness for myself before (thinking about) what happened to (other) Muslims.”
[Al-Manawi, ‘Fayd Al-Qadeer’, 124/1]
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
أحب الناس إلى الله أنفعهم و أحب الأعمال إلى الله عز و جل سرور تدخله على مسلم أو تكشف عنه كربة أو تقضي عنه دينا أو تطرد عنه جوعا و لأن أمشي مع أخي المسلم في حاجة أحب إلي من أن أعتكف في المسجد شهرا و من كف غضبه ستر الله عورته و من كظم غيظا و لو شاء أن يمضيه أمضاه ملأ الله قلبه رضى يوم القيامة و من مشى مع أخيه المسلم في حاجته حتى يثبتها له أثبت الله تعالى قدمه يوم تزل الأقدام و إن سوء الخلق ليفسد العمل كما يفسد الخل العسل
“The most beloved of people to Allah is he who brings most benefit to people, and the most beloved of deeds to Allah the Mighty, the Magnificent, is that you bring happiness to a fellow Muslim, or relieve him of distress, or pay off his debt or stave away hunger from him. It is more beloved to me that I walk with my brother Muslim in his time of need than I stay secluded in the mosque for a month.Whoever holds back his anger, Allah will cover his faults and whoever suppresses his fury while being able to execute it, Allah will fill his heart with satisfaction on the day of judgement. Whoever walks with his brother Muslim in need until he establishes that for him, Allah will establish his feet firmly on the day when all feet shall slip. Indeed, bad character ruins deeds just as vinegar ruins honey.” [Saheeh al Jaami 1/97, no. 176]
Ibn Abbas is reported to have said, “Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, and hates for the sake of Allah, and whoever seals a friendship for His sake, or declares an enmity for His sake, will receive, because of this, the protection of Allah. No one may taste true faith except by this, even if his prayers and fasts are many. People have come to build their relationships around the concerns of the world, but it will not benefit them in any way.” [Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, Jami’ al-Ulum wal Hikam, p.30]
Abu Darda’ رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
ألا أخبركم بأفضل من درجة الصيام والصلاة والصدقة ؟ قالوا : بلى
قال : صلاح ذات البين فإن فساد ذات البين هي الحالقة
“Shall I not inform you of something that is better than (voluntary) fasting, prayer and charity?”They said, ‘indeed’. He replied, ‘Reconciling between yourselves, for the corruption of (what results from) enmity is what destroys (people’s good deeds).”
[At-Tirmidhi, 2509; Abi Da’wud, 4919 – At-Tirmidhi graded the hadeeth as saheeh]
One may say there are such examples on the tongues of people today, where we seek fortune and goodness for others as much as ourselves, but how many actually try putting these words in any meaningful action? And how many would spend more than a day regretting something they may have said or done that infringed upon the rights of brotherhood?
Indeed Tawfeeq is from Allah alone.

If Allah makes you stand up you will never fall, and if he lets you fall and leaves you to yourself, you will always fall.
