Ikramah reported concerning the verse, “Forsake them in bed and strike them,” (4:34) that it means “a striking without severity or pain.” The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Strike them if they disobey you concerning good conduct, a striking without severity.”
Ar-Razi said “it should be a striking with a folded handkerchief or his palm, and he should not strike her with whips or clubs.”

عِكْرِمَةَ يَقُولُ فِي قَوْلِهِ وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ ضَرْبًا غَيْرَ مُبَرِّحٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اضْرِبُوهُنَّ إِذَا عَصَيْنَكُمْ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ ضَرْبًا غَيْرَ مُبَرِّحٍ
أن يكون الضرب بمنديل ملفوف أو بيده، ولا يضربها بالسياط ولا بالعصا
